While manufacturers have optimized the manufacturing process to create premium products, optimizing the delivery process so that the products are received in factory-mint condition by the end-user, has become of paramount importance. In consideration of these goals and objectives, a "hand-delivery" approach must be utilized throughout the entire shipping / delivery process from the factory to the end-user. To best accomplish this, a "controlled delivery system" (CDS) must be implemented.
The first step in optimizing the delivery process is to minimize the amount of cross-docking. By "hand loading" and shipping full truckloads to strategic locations, such as Fulfillment Solution Distribution Centers, cross-docking is eliminated (to this point) and product is now "forward" in the field. Historically, manufacturers have placed product forward in the field by shipping to their own distribution centers. Under the current situation manufactures have found that cross-docking and handling problems still exist, which reinforces the need for implementation of a “controlled delivery system.”
